Summary of Position:
The Resident Director is responsible for the quality and success of the programs offered at the CIEE Study Center in Haifa, Israel. The position is responsible for coordinating all aspects of in-country operations as well as for long-range planning, ongoing program evaluation, and development. The Resident Director is responsible for ensuring the highest levels of program quality and customer satisfaction. This individual must be willing to live full-time in Haifa 12 months per year in order to oversee the spring and fall program sessions.
Primary Responsibilities:
Program Management:

  • Manage all aspects of the program in accordance with CIEE policies and relevant agreements.
  • Manage the relationship with the host institution.
  • Participate in the formulation of the program budget.
  • Establish and maintain local banking arrangements and procedures for transfer of funds to the program.
  • Manage program finances and submit monthly expense reports to the Portland office.
  • Assist Portland staff in assuring the legal basis for the program and for any program staff.
  • Coordinate the housing program (University of Haifa Residence Halls and local homestays) and ensure that all necessary payments are made in a timely manner.

Academic:

  • Oversee and coordinate the academic program in cooperation with the University of Haifa faculty and staff. Advise students on course selection at the beginning of each semester.
  • Organize course registration activities and monitor changes in enrollment in coordination with staff at the University of Haifa.
  • Ensure high quality levels by monitoring the quality of instruction, academic integrity, appropriate degree of difficulty of the academic program, appropriate assessment of student work, and standards of grading.
  • Prepare student grade reports and send promptly to Portland at the conclusion of the program.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for any student requests for special academic exceptions, complaints, appeals, etc.

Student Services:

  • Hold regular and well-publicized office hours and arrange for other staff to do so as well.
  • Confer with individual students, as necessary, and hold occasional group meetings.
  • Plan and implement all aspects of student services:
    • Visas and other legal procedures that apply to students
    • Airport Pick-Up and Program Orientation
    • Cross-cultural information and training
    • Program excursions and field trips
    • Volunteer projects
    • Housing
    • Cultural and social activities
    • Facilities (library, computer access, etc.)
    • Personal counseling and student adjustment; student morale and culture shock
    • Medical and psychological problems
    • Legal matters
    • Conflict resolution
    • Discipline

Health and Services:

  • On an ongoing basis obtain current and reliable information concerning health and safety risks of the local environment, including program-sponsored accommodations, events, excursions, and other activities.
  • Write an annual safety audit covering relevant health and safety information needed by participants, their parents, and sending schools.
  • Provide orientation to participants upon arrival and as needed during the session. Includes: information on safety, health, legal, environmental, political, cultural, and religious conditions in the host country, and appropriate emergency response measures.
  • Provide appropriate advice and warning to participants during the program in order to help them minimize risk and enhance their individual safety.
  • Secure appropriate medical and professional services and help participants obtain the services they may need.
  • In cases of serious health problems, injury, or other significant health and safety circumstances, maintain good communication among all program sponsors and others who need to know.
  • Develop and maintain emergency preparedness processes and a crisis response plan.
  • Communicate to participants applicable codes of conduct and the consequences of non-compliance. Take appropriate action when aware that participants are in violation.

Program Evaluation:

  • Assist with the management of the student evaluation processes after the orientation and at the conclusion of the program, including both evaluations of the program as a whole and of individual courses.
  • Help facilitate the visits of ACB evaluation teams, providing information, coordinating their schedules, establishing appropriate local contacts, setting up group and/or individual meetings with students.
  • Write a Resident Director report at the conclusion of each academic year.

Marketing:

  • Participate in the writing and editing of program materials (advertising materials, catalogue copy, bulletins, handbooks, arrival information, orientation information, pre-departure reading lists, course syllabi, curriculum vitae of teachers, information concerning the country, the locale, and the host institution)

Accountability:

  • The CIEE Haifa Resident Director is responsible for the management and delivery of high-quality academic and co-curricular programs.
  • The Resident Director is also accountable for:
    • In-depth knowledge of his/her program including administrative issues, study center issues, development needs, strategic priorities, sending school issues, and ideas for future development.
    • Communicating regularly with the Portland office concerning all aspects of program operations.
    • Communicating promptly to the Portland office and to the sending school any student academic difficulties, health problems, discipline issues, attendance problems, or unauthorized absence from the program site.
    • Strong understanding of the governance mechanisms of CIEE and the roles and contributions of the ACB and its committees.
    • Maintaining, together with other members of CIEE’s senior management, CIEE’s commitment to providing and preserving a safe and supportive environment for students and employees in which individual ideas and uniqueness are recognized, valued, and given the opportunity to grow.

Judgment, Decision-Making, and Planning:

  • Continually, (and often immediately) apply sound judgment and knowledge to the expedient resolution of a broad range of issues relative to (but not exclusive of) individual students, program/Center staff, emergencies, and the like.
  • Continually evaluate the program (academics and operations) and develop/recommend changes and/or improvements.
  • Respond quickly to student, parent, and/or sending schools’ needs.
  • Responsible for the complete planning of all academic and management aspects of each session.

Confidentiality:

  • The individual in this position must be able to simultaneously balance confidential information and information that can be/needs to be shared in order to effectively solve variety of different issues. The individual must show superior judgment when dealing with confidential information.
  • The Resident Director has access to student applications and student records. S/he also has access to employee salary information and the personnel files of all active employees.
  • S/he is privy to information regarding:
    • Organizational changes and strategic initiatives
    • Student progress and performance
    • Student personal issues
    • Employee performance and development

Contact:

  • Internal: The resident Diurector works closely with all staff and management (onsite and in Portland) to accomplish stated goals and objectives.
  • External: S/he works with:
    • ACB members
    • College international study officers
    • Parents
    • Students
    • Representatives from the host institution and the host country
    • Other local representatives to arrange events, activities, and to establish various procedures (e.g. emergency)

Working Conditions:

  • The Resident Director is expected to be on call for emergency circumstances twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
  • S/he will also be expected to travel on occasion, as required for program orientation and academic and cultural excursions and activities.

Other:

  • From time to time, assist in the development and implementation of an International Faculty Development Seminar, new CIEE programs, including customized programs, a session at the CIEE Annual Conference, or at other professional meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills Requirements:

  • M.A. required. Ph.D. preferred
  • Native or near-native fluency in Hebrew. Proficiency in Arabic preferred.
  • 5-7 years’ professional work experience, preferably in an international education-related position
  • In-depth knowledge of local culture, history, business practices, and academic environment
  • Strong leadership skills and a commitment to customer service
  • Willingness and ability to live full-time (12 months per year) in Haifa, Israel. Preference will be given to candidates who are currently legal residents in Israel.

The European Youth Parliament Sweden will organise the 2nd Euro-
Mediterranean Youth Conference in Stockholm in June 2013, gathering
participants from the entire Euro-Med region. As a youth initiative, this
projects aims to create a platform where European and Mediterranean
youths can mee…

beyond their geographical and cultural borders.
Once at the conference, participants will be working in accordance with the
established working procedures of the European Youth Parliament known
as Team Building, Committee Work and General Assembly.
When?
The 2nd Euro-Mediterranean Youth Conference is an eight day long
conference taking place in the heart of the Swedish capital Stockholm
between the 23rd and 30th of June, 2013. Participants will be asked to book
their flights to arrive in Stockholm on the 23rd of June. Departure will be
on Sunday, June 30th.
Why?
The 2nd Euro-Mediterranean Youth Conference is an initiative inspired by
the movements that compromised the Euro-Med region following the
global financial crisis and what later became known as the ‘Arab Spring’.
Although these demonstrations took place in different parts of the world,
they all shared the particular characteristic of being initiated by young
people expressing a noticeable demand for change. Consequently, the aim
of the 2nd Euro-Mediterranean Youth Conference is to provide young
active citizens of the Euro-Med region with the opportunity to jointly
come up with ideas and projects that contribute to the shaping of their
future societies.
Through meetings and discussions, the conference offers its participants a
unique opportunity to get in touch with youths from the entire Euro-Med
society.

Who?
We are looking for 40 individuals between the ages of 18-26 from Syria,
Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia. We are
looking for you who are actively engaged in projects that serve the civil
society, and who are passionate about issues facing the Euro-Med region.
Furthermore, we seek participants who are open-minded and interested in
sharing their ideas in a culturally diverse environment and who believe they
are able to play an influential role in shaping the future Euro-Med society.
Financial Support
Costs during the conference including accommodation are covered. Each
participant will be granted 250 EUR to compensate for flight expenses
which will be refunded after the conference. We will support you in
obtaining the required visa.
